Home-based Video Ambulatory EEG Monitoring

At our Brisbane Clinical Neuroscience Centre rooms, we offer home-based video ambulatory EEG monitoring, an alternative to in-clinic or hospital monitoring.

What is an ambulatory EEG?:

An Ambulatory Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a prolonged recording of the activity of the brain which is like a routine EEG. You will have electrodes attached to your head with a small recording pack, and then you will go home, coming back to the hospital in one of the following days to have the equipment removed. The purpose of the study is to obtain a longer period of your brain recording during your normal routines and in sleep. Usually, the recording is made from 2-4 days. Sometimes, your doctor may request video ambulatory EEG, where a small camera will record you continuously while synchronising the EEG data to help identify and correlate physical events with brain activity.

What is the purpose of the prolonged ambulatory recording?:

  • Diagnosing the basis of episodic neurological dysfunction

  • Characterising the nature of a patient’s epileptic seizures

  • Localising seizures in patients with uncontrolled epilepsy for further evaluation

  • Assessing treatment responses where subclinical or unaware seizures are suspected or patient has a seizure disorder where evaluating background interictal epileptic activity is useful for prognosticating seizure burden (i.e. genetic generalised epilepsy)

What is the cost?

Our ambulatory EEG service incurs a gap fee of approximately $300, which reflects the expertise and care provided throughout the process. This includes the work of experienced EEG scientists who ensure reliable and accurate monitoring, as well as Dr. Phamnguyen’s review of the entire EEG. Dr. Phamnguyen’s EEG and epilepsy knowledge allows for a thorough analysis of the data, followed by a detailed report for the referring neurologist. This report may provide valuable insights to guide further management and treatment.

Advantages of video ambulatory EEG?

This service is designed for capturing events over periods of several days, even during sleep at night, in the comfort of your own home. The video recording is a key component, where video information captured together with EEG in a patient’s own environment allows us to evaluate each event in detail, including the moments leading up to an event.

Privacy

We take your privacy extremely seriously and will only review video when an event is reported by you or your caregiver or, at times, when there are abnormalities in the EEG data.
