Dr. John Phamnguyen
Dr. John Phamnguyen is an experienced neurologist and subspecialist epileptologist at the Brisbane Clinical Neuroscience Centre (BCNC). In addition to his private practice, he holds public clinical appointments at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) Comprehensive Epilepsy Department and Mater Hospital Brisbane Epilepsy Unit
Dr. Phamnguyen completed his medical training at Griffith University, followed by general neurology training at several tertiary hospitals in Sydney, including an epilepsy fellowship at Westmead Hospital. During his fellowship, he gained extensive experience in evaluating patients with drug-refractory epilepsy and is trained in surgical epilepsy, stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG), and technical evaluation of epilepsy neuroimaging (MRI/PET/SPECT). He is accredited by the Australian and New Zealand Association of Neurologists (ANZAN) as a Level 3 EEG supervisor and actively contributes to the annual ANZAN clinical epilepsy and EEG teaching course for neurology trainees.
Dr. Phamnguyen is currently completing a PhD at the Centre for Advanced Imaging, University of Queensland, Dr. Phamnguyen's research focuses on understanding the brain structures and networks responsible for tonic-clonic seizures. He has presented his research at national and international conferences, and he is an active member of the Epilepsy Society of Australia (ESA), American Epilepsy Society (AES), and the Young Epilepsy Section of the International League Against Epilepsy (YES-ILAE).
As a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland, Dr. Phamnguyen teaches medical students and is dedicated to epilepsy education. At BCNC, he provides comprehensive care for epilepsy patients, including advanced diagnostic testing and customised treatment plans. He collaborates with a team of neurosurgeons trained in minimally invasive epilepsy procedures, such as Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT) and resective epilepsy surgeries. For cases where surgery is not an option, he offers minimally invasive treatments like neuromodulation (Vagal Nerve Stimulation), dietary therapies (ketogenic diet), and if appropriate for consideration clinical trials for new drug treatments and therapies.
